Unusual Florence

The long history of Florence holds surprises even for those who believe they know all its secrets. In the Gallery of Modern Art inside Palazzo Pitti, one of the most visited buildings in the city, you can admire the Monumental Staircase designed by Pasquale Poccianti in 1847, which remained closed for over half a century. The long and careful restoration, during which contemporary marbles were used, has restored the staircase to its magnificent glory, reminiscent of its inauguration during the time of the last Grand Dukes of Tuscany.

The beloved Porcellino Market is famous for the bronze statue by Tacca, which depicts the famous wild boar on the fountain. Also not to be missed is the San Niccolò Tower in Piazza Poggi. The gate, which remains isolated from the surrounding walls, was built in 1324 to defend the Oltrarno district. It is the only tower in Florence that has not been "cut off," meaning it hasn’t been lowered from its original height, thus preserving a very evocative walkway.

Finally, a touch of contemporaneity: the Rose Garden, open throughout June and located in a panoramic position below Piazzale Michelangelo. It hosts nine sculptures and two sketches by Belgian artist Jean Michel Folon.
